Pope Francis: A Champion of Hope and Mercy for Young People

The world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church, who left an indelible mark on the lives of young people during his 12-year papacy. As a powerful  voice in world politics, Pope Francis inspired us with his message of hope, mercy, and compassion. Pope Francis invited all young people of the world to share their experiences of life and faith, through the first synod of its kind,  Pope Francis listened to the voice of young people and responded to what he heard in Christus Vivit. Pope Francis championed and empowered young people when he wrote “You are not ‘the future’ but ‘the present’ of the Church and of society.” (Christus Vivit, paragraph 198) emphasising the importance of young people’s contributions to the church and the world today. 

Impact on Young People

Pope Francis was deeply concerned about the well-being of young people, particularly in regards to mental health challenges. In a speech, he emphasised the need for comprehensive support structures to address the rising issues of self-harm, violence, and skepticism among young people. He encouraged young people to be “artisans of hope” and to dream big, highlighting the importance of education, civic engagement, and environmental care.

– Environmental Stewardship: Through his encyclical “Laudato Si’,” Pope Francis brought attention to the urgent need for climate action and environmental protection, inspiring and affirming young people to work for justice and to take care of the planet.
